Supported variants

Choosing a variant

Open Game settings (or the bot start dialog) and select Russian, English/American, or International. Online matchmaking pairs you with someone who chose the same variant. Older games without a saved variant play as Russian 8×8.

Russian draughts (8×8) - default

  • Board 8×8, dark squares only; 12 men each.
  • Men move one square diagonally forward; they may capture forward and backward.
  • Captures are mandatory; when several exist, the longest capture sequence must be taken (majority).
  • Kings are flying: any distance along a clear diagonal, including long captures.
  • A man that promotes mid-capture continues jumping as a king in the same turn.

English / American checkers (8×8)

  • Board 8×8; 12 men each.
  • Men move and capture only diagonally forward.
  • Kings move and capture one square only (non-flying).
  • Captures are mandatory, but you need not choose the longest path among different pieces.
  • If a man reaches the last rank during a capture, it becomes a king and the turn ends.

International draughts (10×10)

  • Board 10×10; 20 men each (four setup rows).
  • Men capture forward and backward; kings are flying - same capture spirit as Russian.
  • Mandatory capture with majority (longest) sequence.
  • Promotion mid-capture continues as a king.

Victory and draw

  • Win by capturing all enemy pieces, leaving the opponent with no legal moves, or by resignation.
  • Draw by mutual agreement (offer / accept). No 50-move rule in the current engine.

Modes on the site

  • Vs bot - Valera uses the variant you selected.
  • With a friend - invite inherits the host’s variant.
  • Online - matched only with the same variant preference.
